DETAILED OVERVIEW

ITINERARY

Day 1

Departing the local area we have a lunch stop on route arriving at our hotel, the 4* Holiday Inn Newcastle Gosforth Park with time to settle in before dinner.

|

Day 2

Today we make our way to the medieval market town of Alnwick which still retains many of its cobbled streets, narrow alleys and fine stone buildings. Here we visit Alnwick Castle and Gardens. The castle is one of the finest medieval castles in England and famously known to many as "Hogwarts" in the Harry Potter movies as well as the location for the Downton Abbey 2014 Christmas special. The gardens are believed to be one of the oldest walled gardens in the world, surrounded by walls over 250 years old.

|

Day 3

After a leisurely breakfast, our day begins with a visit to the villages of Ford and Etal. Whilst here we include a visit to Lady Waterford Hall, a ride on the Heatherslaw Steam Light Railway, and a visit to the Heatherslaw Cornmill, England's most northerly working water mill. From here we head for the Scottish Borders region at the most northern town in England, Berwick-upon-Tweed. With its castles and towers, the town is full of history and heritage

|

Day 4

Today's excursion takes us across the causeway to Holy Island and the mysterious Lindisfarne Castle. This afternoon, we visit Bamburgh for free time. Maybe visit the majestic castle on the beach or the Grace Darling Museum.

|

Day 5

We journey through beautiful countryside to the capital of Coquetdale, Rothbury. This was once a popular health resort where people came to take the air at its riverside setting of wide-open spaces and delightful scenery. From here we head for magnificent Cragside House, the former home of Lord and Lady Armstrong, now in the care of the National Trust. Cragside was the first house to be lit by electricity - a wonder of the Victorian age. The house is fascinating and the gardens are spectacular with towering conifers, rocky crags, waterfalls and more.
