Day 1
We depart the local area and make our way north to York. A city where ancient walls surround incredible local businesses, attractions, shops, and eateries. There are thirty world-class museums including the National Railway Museum, York Minster, York Castle Museum, York Dungeon & the JORVIK Viking Centre. Enjoy a cruise along the River Ouse or get some retail therapy and explore the famous York Shambles. Today, the beautiful old buildings have been restored and now house cheerful cafés, quirky boutiques and even a coin & stamp dealer. We arrive at the 3* Burn Hall Hotel with time to settle in before dinner.
|Day 2
This morning we make our way to Pickering where we board the North York Moors Railway. The one-way journey takes in the awe-inspiring North York Moors National Park passing through historic stations, including Goathland Station used in both Harry Potter & Heartbeat. This afternoon we have time to explore the seaside town of Whitby. From the atmospheric Abbey towering over winding cobbled streets to the windswept beach and working harbour, Whitby is not your traditional coastal town. Try some award-winning fish and chips, follow the footsteps of Bram Stoker's Dracula and English explorer Captain James Cook, or discover the history of the famous Whitby Jet.
Day 3
Today we visit Castle Howard - a place like no other. Home to the Earl's of Carlisle, the Howard family. Castle Howard's friendly and knowledgeable guides are on hand to share their stories with you as you tour the house at your own pace, exploring a treasure trove of inspiring architecture and interiors, as well as world-renowned collections. With 1,000 acres of parkland & gardens to explore, Castle Howard is a haven of peace and tranquillity with extensive woodland walks, temples, lakes and fountains. The monumental landscape offers breath-taking views at every turn.
|Day 4
This morning we make our way to Mount Grace Priory, House & Gardens, the best-preserved Carthusian priory in England. Roam the ruins of this unusual medieval monastery and find out what makes the priory so unique in the reconstructed monk's cell. See the gardens recently renovated and don't forget to keep a look out for the famous priory stoats as you go. We have time for lunch in the market town of Thirsk before visiting the World of James Herriot. Walk through his fully-restored 1940s home and surgery; travel back in time to what life was like when James was practicing. See the car he drove, step into the TV set and try your hand at being a vet.
|Day 5
After a leisurely breakfast we depart the hotel and make our way home with a stop on route.
