DETAILED OVERVIEW
Suffolk Three Rivers Tour Including Cruise, Tea & Cake
This is a beautifully balanced day out with a coach tour and a river cruise. Throughout the day you are in the company of a top notch Blue Badge Tour Guide, there to look after the logistics and entertain you with stories worth listening to. River Estuaries are magical places. At low tide meandering streams cross shining mudflats. At high tide vast expanses of water reflect the changing light of wide skies. In all you visit three of the most beautiful river estuaries in East Anglia: The Stour, the Orwell and the Deben, on the last of which we enjoy an afternoon cruise with tea and cake. You begin the day at Flatford Mill on the bucolic and sleepy bit of the River Stour where John Constable's father owned the Mill. It's a short walk along a country lane to see the mill pond setting for one of his most famous paintings - The Haywain. There is a shuttle available for people with walking difficulties - please let us know in advance if you would like this option. Back on the coach you follow the river towards the sea. Manningtree is an attractive little port famous for its swans, maltings and sailing barges. This is Englands smallest town 22 acres at low tide! The High Street is charming and olde worlde but it hides a dark history as the HQ of Matthew Hopkins, the notorious Witchfinder General. You follow the River Stour along The Walls to the mysterious Mistley Towers - they look like two ends of an invisible church and that's exactly what they are - part of a Robert Adams model village and spa which never saw the light of day. You will have freetime in Woodbridge for lunch (at own cost). Woodbridge is one of the gems in Suffolk's crown with a history of rope-making, sail-making and boat-building. For the afternoon we are heading to Waldringfield and an all-weather cruiser for a 90 minute cruise on the River Deben. About seven times out of ten they head down river towards Felixstowe but every now and then they head upriver past Sutton Hoo towards Woodbridge. It depends on the tide on the day. Both trips are interesting and attractive. Tea & Cake will be served and there is also a bar if youd like to round your day off with a glass of something stronger.
