DETAILED OVERVIEW
Waterperry Gardens
Just a stones throw from Oxford and within easy reach of London, nestles Waterperry Gardens. Made famous by Beatrix Havergal who established her School of Horticulture for Ladies here from 1932 to 1971, its now home to beautifully landscaped ornamental gardens, a quality plant centre and garden shop, gallery and gift barn, museum and teashop. The tea shop serves morning coffee, light lunches and afternoon teas. Beatrix Havergal and Avice Sanders became friends in the early 1920s whilst on the staff of Downe House School. With the headmistress blessing they departed in September 1927 to establish the gardening school that Beatrix had dreamed of running. They rented a small cottage and 2 acres of walled gardens in the grounds of Pusey House near Faringdon where they received their first students. Most of the paths at Waterperry are accessible to visitors in wheelchairs. All buildings are accessible for wheelchair users and others with limited mobility. The ornamental gardens are mainly flat and most paths are wide enough for wheelchairs. Most paths are gravel-surfaced but this is well compacted, and should not cause too many problems, although some areas may be more difficult at certain times of the year.
